雅楽や花嫁行列、そして白無垢など、チャペルでの結婚式とまた一味違ったその厳かな雰囲気が魅力の神前式。日本人ですら思わず見とれてしまいますが、外国人からみたら尚更興味をそそるものでしょう。

「神前式」ってようするにどういうこと！？を、英語で説明してみましょう。
There are basically two types of wedding ceremonies in Japan: western-style and Japanese traditional style called “Shinzen Shiki”.
日本には基本的に２つのタイプの結婚式があります。西洋式か、神前式と呼ばれる日本の伝統的なものです
Most of the Japanese traditional wedding ceremonies are held at a Shinto shrine, performed by a Shinto priest called “Kan-nushi”.
日本の伝統的な結婚式のほとんどが、神道の神社で、神主と呼ばれる神道の僧侶によって執り行われます
In the past, only close family members and matchmakers called “Nakodo” attended the wedding ceremony. However, today this tradition is changing.
昔は近い親族と、仲人と呼ばれるマッチメーカーのみが結婚式に参列しました。しかし、現在この伝統は変わってきています
Many couples do not have matchmakers and there are some shrines that allow distant family members, and friends of the bride and groom to attend the ceremony.
多くのカップルは仲人がおらず、いくつかの神社は親戚や、新婦と新郎の友人たちの式への参列を許しています。
Although the number of the guests is still limited to be small in order to keep the ceremony private.
ただし、式を内密に保つために参列者の数が少なく制限されるのは変わっていません
ここに注意！ 日本人の苦手ポイント
LとRの判別が難しい我々日本人に取って、以下の４つの単語は音の違いが微妙なため、苦戦する単語です。groom「新郎」と言いたいのにgloom「陰気」、またはbroom「ほうき」と言わぬよう、要注意です！

- gloom – 闇、暗いところ、憂鬱
- bloom – 花が咲く
- broom – ほうき

「神前式」の流れを英語で説明
「神前式」の流れをご存じですか？これが説明できれば、外国人の友人からの質問も「怖いものなし」。それでは例文を交えてみていきましょう。
The traditional wedding procedure can differ depending on the Shinto shrine.
伝統的な式の手順は神道の神社によって変わります。
Generally, a Shinto wedding ceremony starts with purification, and the priest offers prayers to the gods.
一般的に神道の結婚式はお清めから始まり、そして神主が神々に祈願します。
The bride and groom share three nuptial cups of sake. This is called “san-san-kudo”.
新婦と新郎が固めの杯を交わします。これは三三九度と呼ばれます。
The bride and groom take three sips of sake from the small, medium, and large cups.
新婦と新郎は大中小の3つの杯からお酒を啜ります。
And then the groom reads words of commitment, and then the ceremony ends with symbolic offerings to the gods.
そして新郎が誓いの言葉を読み上げ、象徴的な奉納をして式が終わります。
Many couples now exchange wedding rings, which is one of the new traditions borrowed from the West.
現在は多くのカップルが結婚指輪を交換します。これは西洋から取り入れられた新しい慣習の一つです。

「神前式」の衣装を英語で説明
「神前式」において印象的な衣装、白無垢と袴について説明をみてみましょう。
At a traditional Japanese wedding, the bride and groom usually wear Japanese wedding kimono.
伝統的な日本の結婚式では、新婦と新郎は大抵結婚式用の着物を着ます。
The bride wears a white wedding kimono called “Shiromuku” with a white headdress.
新婦は白無垢と呼ばれる白い着物をきて、頭飾りをつけます。
ここに注意！日本人の苦手ポイント
headdress（ヘッドドレス）のRが上手く発音できないとheadless「首無し」と聞こえてしまいます。どうしても上手く発音できないときは、若干意味が変わりますがbig hat「大きな帽子」など簡単な言い回しに変えましょう。
It symbolizes(英：symbolises) purity and that the bride will become the color of her husband’s family.
これは新婦が夫側の家族の色に染まる、という純粋さを象徴しています。
The groom wears a kimono too, but it’s a little different from what the bride wears.
新郎も着物を着ますが、新婦が着る物とは少し違います。
It’s a kimono with a hakama (trousers), and haori (overcoat). They are usually black or grey and have his family’s emblem embroidered on it.
その着物は袴（ズボン）と羽織り（羽織るコート）です。大体グレーか黒で家紋が刺繍されています。

「ご祝儀」「引き出物」を英語で説明
海外では珍しい「ご祝儀」「引き出物」文化を説明すれば喜ばれること間違いなし。それでは例文をみてみましょう。
One of the unique traditions of the wedding in Japan is that the guests give a gift of money to the groom and bride. It’s called “Goshugi”.
日本特有の伝統のうちの一つが、参列者が新婦と新郎にギフトとしてお金をわたすことです。これはご祝儀と呼ばれます。
There are elaborately decorated envelopes specially designed for wedding money gifts. These envelopes can be found in every convenience store or even 100 yen shop.
こった飾りのついたご祝儀用にデザインされた封筒があります。この封筒はコンビニや、100円均一でさえも見つける事ができます。
The wedding gifts start at ￥10,000, and can be ￥30,000, ￥50,000 or ￥100,000, depending on the relationship between the guest and couple.
ご祝儀は1万円から始まり、3万円、5万円、10万円と、参列者と新郎新婦との関係によってかわります。
The guests usually do not bring store-bought gifts.
参列者はお店で購入したギフトは通常持参しません。
It is usually the guests who receive take-home gifts at the wedding.
家に持ち帰るギフトを貰うのは、参列者の方です。
The gifts from the couple to the wedding guests are called “Hikidemono”. This is an old tradition that used to mean to display the family’s wealth.
カップルから結婚式の参列者に送られるギフトを引き出物と呼びます。これは古い伝統で、家族の富を表す意味がありました。
The gifts often include tableware, baked goods, and their own selection from a catalog.
ギフトは大抵の場合、食器、焼き菓子、そしてギフトカタログから自身で選ぶものが含まれます。

日本の「教会式」を英語で説明
「クリスチャンでなくても教会で式を挙げられる」ことは欧米から見ると不思議です。これを英語で説明できれば日本のユニークな一面も紹介できます。
The western-style wedding ceremony is conducted by a minister or priest.
西洋式の結婚式は、牧師か祭司が執り行います。
In Japan, you don’t have to believe in the Christian faith to have a wedding ceremony at a Christian church.
日本では教会で結婚式を挙げるにおいてクリスチャンである必要はありません。
Many people choose to have a wedding ceremony at a Christian church because it is fashionable and many brides want to wear a white wedding dress for the ceremony.
多くの人がクリスチャンの教会で結婚式を挙げることを選択します。なぜなら、お洒落ということ、そして多くの花嫁が白のウェディングドレスを結婚式で着ることを希望するからです。

「披露宴」を英語で説明
チャペルでの結婚でも神前式でも、「披露宴」は同じ風習ですよね。それでは例文をみてみましょう。
After the wedding ceremony, the bride and groom welcome more guests to the reception party.
結婚式のあと、新婦と新郎はさらにゲストを迎えて披露宴を行います。
The party usually takes place at a restaurant or a banquet room in the hotel. The number of guests ranges from about 10 to over 100 among whom are relatives, friends, co-workers, and bosses of the bride and groom.
披露宴は大抵の場合、レストランかホテルの宴会場で行われます。ゲストの数は10から100を超える範囲で新婦と新郎の親戚、友達、同僚、上司です。
During the reception party, a meal is served and several guests make contributions such as speeches, songs and other performances.
披露宴の間、食事が提供され、ゲストはスピーチ、歌やその他のパフォーマンスなどで貢献します。
One of the highlights of the ceremony is the ritual of cake cutting, which is borrowed from western custom.
披露宴の目玉のうちの一つが、西洋から取り込まれたケーキカッティングの儀式です。
At the very end of the party, the couple will make a speech to their parents and all the guests to express their gratitude.
披露宴の最後にはカップルがスピーチをし、両親やゲストに感謝の意を表します。
